Commissioners Court

“If [the union’s] standing in the way of that [privatization], then we can get rid of them, ...”
Commissioner Kevin Wolff in The SA Current, Sept. 7 2011

Lately a couple of our Commissioners, Kevin Wolff and Tommy Adkisson have put forth pieces on the incredibly inane Express-News driven MySA.com where they openly support privatization and the latest budget maneuvering to eliminate 100 full time Deputy positions at our jail through attrition.  Today though, we saw a new tactic being employed by Wolff...proposed Union Busting.  Wolff is threatening to attempt to decertify the DSABC as a union.  I'm sure this is specific to our current collective bargaining negotiations as his stated goal is to, once again, "save money" and he has specifically said that he sees the union as standing in his way of privatizing the jail and his goal is to get rid of the union.

I wonder if the DSABC is going to focus on this latest move (and the immediate problem of our staffing) or continue the effort to embroil themselves in the lawsuit about our CBA.  I got news for them; if they get decertified in the meantime, we won't have to worry about the CBA.

Suggestions: DSABC, focus on our staffing issues and stop the attempt at union busting by Kevin Wolff by getting the word out to the media.  Buy space in the paper, rent a billboard, whatever it takes to get the word out.  We are at a huge disadvantage in the message business.

Also, if anyone from the SAPOA or Fire department unions are reading this, your union CBA's may be the next target of city officials if Wolff is successful in this maneuver.

Contact your Commissioner and let them know what you think.
